Looking back

1932

On November 19, 1932 a fire distorted the old wooden former school house that served as the Gilchrist County Courthouse. Gilchrist County awarded a contract to build a new courthouse and construction began in the spring of 1933 and was completed on August 2, 1933 at a cost of $20,000. Workers earned 10 cent an hour but they had to take half that in groceries. Most of the labors were local and at the height of the depression this was much needed work for local men.
