Looking Back for 100 years

Looking back at 100 years of Gilchrist County history.

 

1949

The Fair Store in Trenton was selling men’s overalls for $1.98, oil cloth was 59 cents a yard, and 8 ounce feather tick was 59 cents a yard (feather mattress).

The Gilchrist County School Board voted to borrow money to build a gym at Bell High School.

The Legion honored county veterans with a Pileau Dinner at Akins Springs. 

1979

The Stuckey’s Candy and Gift Shop in Fanning Springs was robbed of $600. Gilchrist County Sheriff Roy Rogers ask Dixie County Sheriff Glen Dyals to help find the robbers because they fled north on US 19. 

Lisa Townsend was the Trenton High School Homecoming Queen. 

Mrs. Lois Scott the director of the Gilchrist County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), was honored for her 25 years with ASCS. 

1986

Mr. C.V. Jones, Sr. Received a certificate and plaque from Doyle Conner, the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture, recognizing his family as a Century Pioneer Farm Family. The Jones family had farmed in Gilchrist County for over 100 years at that time.
