Looking back at 100 years of Gilchrist County History.

 

1935

The Gilchrist County Woman’s Club met at the home of Mrs. Sam Hardee and the hostesses were Mrs. Emma Henderson and Miss Cola Hardee. It was reported the Club’s project of giving out Christmas baskets in the community was completed.  The meeting was closed with a lovely salad course served by the hostesses.

 

Mr. R. C. Lang was president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Trenton. During his time as president Lang served with several local men who helped the bank stay open during the Great Depression, including W. E. Bell, N. G. Wade and Dr. O. S. Clyatt. The bank’s board of directors were R. C. Lang Chairman, S. B. Hardee, J. B. Stockman, Lizzie L. Bell, and S. L. Scruggs.

 

1976

Farmers and Merchants Bank (Now Capital City Bank) moved into its new building located on the corner of State Road 26 and Main Street. (The Bank moved from the building where Doug McKoy’s Law office and Gilchrist Title Service is today, 302 N. Main Street) The new bank building was built for $225,000. H. E. “Gene” Osteen was the president at the time and the bank had 21 employees.

 

The Gilchrist County Farm Bureau held a dinner to honor past presidents. Some of the past presidents and their wives who attended were Frank Colson, Donald Hurst, Jim Brialmont, J. W. Miller, Stacey Quincy and current president Roy Wilson.

 

1999

Construction of the new Post Office in Bell began in April with a Ground Breaking. Employees of the Post Office who attended were Donna Jones, Kathy Akins, Jean Sails, and Alice Cannon.

 

The Wild Beast Feast was held at the State Farmers Market east of Trenton. Around 900 attended the Gilchrist County Education Foundation much enjoyed event. Crosstyz Country Band of Bell provided the entertainment for the event.
