The final week of 100 years

December 1975

Gilchrist County observed it’s 50th Birthday on December 4, 1975, on the Gilchrist County courthouse lawn. The birthday party included a show and tell time, sing along with patriotic music preformed by the Trenton High School Band. Free refreshments were served and citizens were allowed to view historic records on display in the courthouse.

County Commission Chairman Cecil Corbin officiated at the event and Mrs. Hilda Kressman presented the County’s history. She stated, “On December 4, 1925, it was cut off from Alachua County to become a separate county. It was named after Albert Gilchrist who was Florida’s Governor from 1909-1913.” Trenton Mayor Tony Collins presented a patriotic reading at the end of the event.

A great number of county citizens attended the event and helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gilchrist County.

Thank you all for following along this year as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Gilchrist County becoming the 67th county in the state.

A special thank you to the Gilchrist County Woman’s Club who published “Gilchrist County Its History and Its People” a history book of our county, also the Gilchrist County Journal which was the local newspaper for much of the past 100 years. The information that has been published since last January in this column came from those two sources.
