BBQ’s, New Postal Service, and 4-H
Looking back at the past hundred years of Gilchrist County history.
1955
Farmers Mutual Exchange in Trenton held a Grand Opening barbecue supper at their new store. They were the successor to Tri-County Farmers CoOp. R. A. Waller was the general manager and Mr. D. W. Brooks General Manager of the Cotton Producers Association was the guest speaker for the event. (Farmers Mutual Exchange was located where the Trenton Animal Hospital is today.)
1968
Trenton Postmaster Bess W. Rowell extended a welcome to those gathered for the opening of the new modern Post Office in Trenton. Mrs. Virginia Drummond the Postal Clerk was also at the event with a host of dignitaries including Hon. H. E. Lancaster. (Trenton Post Office was located in the building where Cherry’s Restaurant is today.)
Bell FFA and Bell 4-H Club won the annual land judging event that year. Ray Barron farm at Jennings Lake was the site of the event. Bell 4-H high individuals were Joe Ellis, Roy Palmer and Wayne Akins. Some 98 students participated in the event that was sponsored by the Gilchrist Soil and Water Conservation District and Farmers and Merchants Bank in Trenton.
1990
Trenton Rotary Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary in May. The Club began in 1940 and was sponsored by the Gainesville Rotary Club. Mr. Hugh Hendrix a charter member of Trenton Rotary was honored at the Golden Anniversary banquet.
